An Introduction – A Guide to the Botany of the Zombie Apocalypse

Hello and a very warm welcome to this guide.

The shuffling, rotten, moaning undead are a familiar sight to anyone who watches the TV or Cinema.  Popularised by George A Romero's feature film 'Night of the Living Dead' in the late sixties, Zombies and their post apocalyptic future quickly became a pulp culture premise with a life of its own.

Today, Zombie Survival Scenario, is kind of an abbreviation to Young Adults.  Almost anyone you ask, has a rudimentary plan and needs almost no clarification on context. This is testament to the enduring popularity Zombies. Guessing how you might outwit the undead and an exercise in ingenuity and intelligence - in my opinion is a worthwhile amusement.

This blog is designed to showcase some of the most interesting and useful plants in the United Kingdom today. With a little imagination, I will guide you through the dangers and downfalls of a young Botanist learning to navigate a Zombie Survival Situation.

Join me with each new post where you can expect to see:

  • A series of featured plants explained – identifying characteristics, notes on habitat, usage and detailed pictures or botanical illustrations.

  • Interviews with specialists from a wide range of backgrounds giving their take on a survival situation.

  • The rundown of the best spots in the country for an afternoon’s worth of Botanising.  (With notes on how to keep a field diary and why this is indispensable)

  • Featured questions- answered!

  • Bitten by the Botany bug and want to learn more? I will also publish Field Meeting Dates across the UK. How to join your local Natural History Society, the best Journals to subscribe and more.

This Blog does not condone the foraging of plants and is an exercise in an imaginary science fiction scenario.  If you are interested in foraging please ensure you have the property owner’s permission, you are aware of the legality of foraging and are accompanied by a specialist. The UK is native to poisonous species of plants and fungus, if in doubt, never consume foraged foods.

Botany is best learnt out of the house and away from a computer if you are interested in learning more join and group and learn from experienced members.
